Overview
The Tablo Hemodialysis System from Outset Medical is the first dialysis machine designed to work both in the ICU and in the patient's home — without requiring a plumber, water treatment professional, or specialized biomedical engineer to set up. Tablo accomplishes this by integrating on-demand dialysate production from tap water, using a miniaturized multi-stage water purification system built directly into the console.
Conventional dialysis centers require enormous infrastructure: centralized reverse osmosis water treatment systems, distribution piping, and large floor-standing machines. Tablo replaces all of that with a single rolling console (roughly the size of a carry-on luggage) that connects to a standard sink, purifies water to AAMI standards in real time, mixes dialysate on demand, and delivers dialysis — all through a consumer-grade touchscreen interface designed to be operated by patients with minimal training.
The implications for the 800,000 Americans with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are profound: home hemodialysis (HHD) consistently demonstrates superior outcomes vs. in-center dialysis, yet HHD penetration in the US remains below 3% — primarily due to the complexity of legacy home machines. Tablo is purpose-built to change that equation.
Key Technology
💧
On-Demand Water Purification
Multi-stage filtration (sediment, carbon, RO, DI, UV) purifies standard tap water to dialysis grade in real time — no pre-treatment infrastructure required.
📱
Consumer-Grade Touchscreen UI
Step-by-step guided setup and treatment delivery through an intuitive 15" touchscreen. Patients complete training in 2–4 weeks vs. 2–3 months for legacy home machines.
☁️
Remote Monitoring + Telehealth
Every treatment uploads automatically to the cloud. Care teams can monitor vitals, treatment parameters, and adherence remotely — enabling telehealth-based nephrology management.
🏥
Dual Setting: Home + ICU
Same device cleared for both home HHD and acute in-hospital use (ICU/ward). Hospitals benefit from a single platform across care settings.
Clinical Evidence
Home HD Outcomes
HOME-HD Study Literature
Multiple RCTs and registry studies consistently show home hemodialysis reduces hospitalizations by 25–40%, improves survival, reduces cardiovascular events, and dramatically improves quality of life vs. in-center HD — establishing the clinical rationale for Tablo's market opportunity.
User Experience
Tablo Patient Training Study
Outset published data showing median patient training time of 14 days to independent home dialysis with Tablo, compared to 28–42 days typically required for legacy NxStage System One — the primary incumbent home HD platform.
Hospital Economics
ICU Tablo vs. CRRT Cost Analysis
Tablo used in intermittent acute HD in the ICU setting demonstrates significantly lower supply costs and nursing time vs. continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for stable AKI patients — driving hospital interest beyond the home market.
