Dexcom G8 CGM

Dexcom — Continuous Glucose Monitoring NASDAQ: DXCM
loading...

Overview

The Dexcom G8 is the next-generation continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system from Dexcom, targeting a 21-day sensor wear life — triple the G6's 10-day sensor life. Currently in development and pre-submission stage with the FDA, G8 is expected to set new benchmarks for CGM accuracy, longevity, and user convenience.

Building on the G7's fully disposable, all-in-one form factor, the G8 integrates improved electrochemistry and a next-generation algorithm to reduce MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference) below the G7's already-class-leading 8.2%. The extended wear duration dramatically reduces per-day sensor cost for the estimated 37 million US diabetics.

The G8 is also expected to support direct-to-Apple-Watch glucose reading without a phone, and deeper integration with automated insulin delivery (AID) systems including Tandem Control-IQ and Omnipod 5.

Key Technology

📅
21-Day Wear Duration
Novel electrochemical coating and improved membrane technology extend sensor stability from 10 days (G6) to 21 days per single sensor application.
🎯
Sub-8% MARD Target
Next-gen glucose oxidase formulation aims to achieve MARD below 8%, pushing CGM accuracy toward lab-grade blood glucose monitoring standards.
Direct Wearable Connectivity
Bluetooth 5.3 transmitter enables direct pairing with Apple Watch and Android Wear OS devices, eliminating phone dependency for real-time glucose readings.
🤖
AID System Integration
Designed from ground up for seamless closed-loop integration with automated insulin delivery systems across multiple pump manufacturers.

Competitive Context

Current Leader
Dexcom G7 — 10-Day, 8.2% MARD
Market-leading CGM launched 2023. G8 will succeed it with extended wear and improved accuracy while maintaining the fully-disposable one-piece design.
Competitor
Abbott Libre 3 Plus — 15-Day
Abbott's extended wear CGM targeting 15-day life. Dexcom G8's 21-day target would reclaim the wear duration advantage if achieved and cleared.
Future Threat
Medtronic Simplera Sync — 7-Day
Medtronic's CGM integrated with 780G pump — shorter wear but tight AID loop integration signals the competitive direction for all next-gen CGMs.
